Biography

Bruce Lee was born on November 27, 1940, in San Francisco while his father, Lee Hoi-chuen, a Chinese opera star, was touring California with his mother.

Raised in Hong Kong, he began learning martial arts at around the age of 13.

At age 19, his parents sent him to study in the United States. He began studying theater in Washington, D.C., where he met his future wife, Linda Emery. They had two children, Brandon and Shannon. In the late 1960s, Bruce Lee opened a martial arts school. He developed a new martial art, Jeet Kune Do.

In 1964, following a kung fu demonstration during the Long Beach International Karate Tournament, he landed a role in the television series The Green Hornet. Although the series was not a big success, his performance was noticed, and he went on to land a few supporting roles.

Disappointed at not being chosen for the lead role in the series Kung Fu, he accepted an offer to shoot the film The Big Boss (1971) in Hong Kong.

In 1972, he starred in Fist of Fury and The Way of the Dragon

Bruce Lee died on July 20, 1973, in Hong Kong, probably from cerebral edema following an allergic reaction to the painkiller Equagesic. He is buried next to his son Brandon at Lake View Cemetery in Seattle.
